Patient & Donor Stories

Meet Karen Maitland

Corporate Donor, Carousel Flowers

When people think of donations that support the Hospital, they may think cash or deferred gifts detailed in a will. Karen Maitland, owner of Carousel Flowers, thinks petals.

The Power of Flowers

And it’s pretty simple to explain why.

“They appreciate it,” says Karen of the volunteers who ask for low-cost centerpieces to grace tables at Hospital special events. “I look at how the people treat me, and honestly, they inspire the better part of me to react in a positive way,” she says.

Karen pays it forward by doing little things like sending bouquets to area businesses and the Hospital during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The bouquets encourage women to take a flower and get a mammogram at EMHC or celebrate being a survivor.

Not only do the pink flowers remind people to take initiative with their health, says Karen, flowers make people feel better.

And in giving them, Karen feels good, too.

“I work with some wonderful people. I can’t compliment them enough. What I do is an outreach into the community – a way to say, ‘I appreciate you,’” she says.
