Patient & Donor Stories

Meet Dick and Betty Bruce

Donor

As a former executive of Sears, Roebuck & Co., Dick Bruce traveled the world. Now, he says he’s perfected the art of retirement – staying a little more anchored in Elmhurst and giving back to his community hospital.

Creative Giving

But Dick and Betty’s gift goes beyond the traditional method cash. They designate a portion of their IRA disbursements to the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Foundation, which further reduces their tax obligation.

Arranging the paperwork was easy. “Basically, it was a phone call to my broker and I signed some papers,” recalls Dick. Now, he and Betty enjoy knowing they’re helping build the hospital that’s meant so much to them.

How?

In addition to serving as a volunteer firefighter for years, therefore making countless trips to EMH’s emergency department, Dick’s mother suddenly needed emergency care while visiting her son and daughter-in-law. “She fell in love with her doctor and I’ll never forget that,” Dick says with a laugh.

So it’s a personal thing, this relationship with EMHC.

“If you live your life strictly for your own enjoyment, what good is it? If your life can count for something that’s a lasting benefit, you have a good reason for being,” he says.
